The Pointless Man

In 1971, Harry Nilsson released an album called “The Point”. It told, in narration and song, the story of Oblio. In brief, Oblio was born in the land of Point, where all the people and all the animals had a point on the top of their heads — except Oblio. He was round-headed, and much ridiculed. His only real friend was his dog, Arrow (and the only hit song off the album was the track “Me and my Arrow”). Oblio annoyed the local count, and under an old law that stated that everyone in Point must, in fact, have a point, he was banished to the Pointless Forest. He underwent various adventures while there, and also realized that the trees were pointed, the leaves on the trees were pointed, the rocks had points, the grass had points, etc., so the forest wasn’t pointless at all. After some time he returned to the land of Point, and was immediately arrested and questioned as to why he, being round-headed, should be allowed to return. His response was something along the lines of “I went to the Pointless Forest, and the trees had points, even the leaves on the trees had points. In fact, everything I encountered seemed to have a point. I figured that if everything else had a point, I must have one too”. At this point someone in the crowd yelled out “He’s got a point there”. And with a bit more dialog, Oblio was home again.

The point (pun intended) of mentioning this is that I am trying to figure out what my point may be. I seem to be just drifting through life with nothing much happening. Way back in 1997 (March 20th, in fact), my quote of the day was “If your spirits are low, do something; if you have been doing something, do something different.” I need to apply that to my life. I often moan to myself (and occasionally to others) that I have no significant other. That’s my own fault, because I never ask anyone out. Why not? Heck if I know. I must, must, must find a way to change that.

Yes, I’m rambling, but I haven’t made a pointless ramble in at least a week now, so I’m due.

Oh, the title of this post was from one of the individuals Oblio encountered in the Pointless Forest, the Pointless Man — or the Pointed man. You see, he had lots of points, all pointing in different directions. As he pointed out, “A point in every direction is like no point at all”.

Community Chorus returns!

Tonight was the first rehearsal of the UALR community chorus for the fall term.?? We’re doing selections from Handel’s Messiah for the concert in December. The rehearsal went well, and I enjoyed singing, but I came away rather depressed. A large part of that is because I apparently dropped my wallet in the men’s room a bit before rehearsal. It was found and returned to me a few minutes later, but unfortunately without the cash that it held. I had gone to the ATM this afternoon and gotten $100 so I would have money to pay the choir dues and have some money for?? the weekend. I didn’t need to lose that much money, but at least that’s all that was taken. I wouldn’t want to have to deal with replacing all the cards, etc.

I should try to concentrate on the fun I had singing and ignore the less-than-fun times.

Early to rise

I woke up this morning about 3:00 a.m. with a bad headache. You know, one of those where you just don’t want to move. I knew if I would just get up, take some aspirin and drink some water that I would feel better. Nonetheless, it took me twenty minutes to make that happen. Sure enough, I did start to feel better. As I was climbing back into bed I looked out at the moon and thought it looked funny. Ah, yes. There was an eclipse this morning and I was seeing the onset. By the time I actually got up for my shower the moon was in total eclipse. It looked neat, but was unfortunately low enough it was obscured by the treetops. I wasn’t sufficiently motivated to jump in the car and go find someplace with a clear southwest horizon, so I just looked through the trees. Maybe next time.

During my last doze, I had one of the odd dreams that I actually somewhat remember: I was driving along in a car, only I couldn’t see over the dashboard. I was steering by looking out the window at the rearview mirror and watching the center line. After a bit I drove off the side of a cliff and the car landed in a tree. Just as in the cartoons, branches broke one by one until the car was sitting on the ground and still drivable. That’s just a fragment from something longer, but not all will be shared. I wish I remembered more of my dreams. When I do I usually enjoy their oddness.

Tire-ing evening

I intended to go out to dinner this evening, and stop at Wal-Mart on the way home to pick up a few things for kickball tomorrow. It didn’t work quite that way. I was only a short distance from the house when I realized that I had a mostly-flat tire. I drove back home, put on the temporary spare, and realized that the tire I had taken off had a hole in the sidewall (possibly from my driving on it while flat, possibly not). I decided to continue my plans and worry about it on Monday. A little ways down highway 113 I discovered that the car was handling terribly. I couldn’t corner over about 35mph. I knew that it would be a bad idea to try to wait until Monday, so I headed to Wal-Mart to buy new tires. They certainly aren’t my first choice, but they’re the only place open on a Saturday evening. Replacing tires should take about 45 minutes. I left the automotive section a full two hours later (and $500 poorer), but I have new tires. At that point dinner didn’t sound nearly so appealing, so I came back home and had a sandwich. All-in-all, not the best way to spend a Saturday evening.

Early morning

Early morning

Early in the morning, when fog surrounds my house, dampening the sounds and blurring the light, it’s possible to believe that I’m alone in the world, and nothing exists beyond what I can see.

Singing in the Rain

My tap dance instructor happens to be the choreographer for “Singing in the Rain” at Murry’s Dinner Playhouse. He recommended that we see the show, which gave me the perfect opening to ask one of the girls in the class (Allison) to accompany me. Surprisingly enough, she said yes. It wasn’t really a date, but I had en enjoyable evening in the presence of an attractive woman.?? I could certainly find worse ways to spend my time.

Kickball and Tap dance

Sunday was the opening day of the fall 2007 season for the LRKA. Since it was expected to be rather hot, we decided to help people cool down by bringing out a pool (12 feet by 32 inches) and a couple of Slip-N-Slides. That worked out fairly well for the kids, but very few adults took advantage of them. I was hoping for women in bikinis, but not too many showed up. Since I had the task of filling the pool, I was at the park by around 8:30. Daniel showed up at 9:00 to help me and we started the pool filling and set up the Slip-N-Slides. Daniel, being a normal person, went back home for a few hours. I stuck around, finished setting up the sound system, and generally chilled waiting for the games to begin. Noon came and kickball started. It was fun to see people back, but it was hot. By the time our game started at 7:30, I just wanted to go home and get off my feet. I wasn’t in the field, but I was in the kicking lineup. I spent much of the game time rolling up hoses, picking up Slip-N-Slides, and generally getting ready to go home, so I didn’t really spend much time watching the play. We won, but possibly at the price of our integrity. I’m not sure that DIE had a good time, and that somewhat spoils it for me.

The school year began yesterday and with it my tap dance class. The first day only four students showed up (of the seven that were supposed to be there). The nice thing is that all the others are attractive females, so it should be a fun semester. Today I started learning a little of what tap is about, and, like any other dance form, it’s going to be a lot of work, but fun at the same time. Unlike any other dance class I’ve had, our instructor wants us to keep a journal and turn it in at various times during the class. That’s what I really should be working on tonight, but I’m not.

Do they even know the meaning of the word?

On the way home this afternoon, I was listening to KMJX-FM (Magic 105). At 5:00 they announced “40 minutes of non-stop classic rock” (or something like that, but the non-stop was emphasized). The played one song, then a station-ID. After the second, the DJ came on to tell us (again) that they were playing non-stop music. This was repeated through pretty much every song until 5:20, when there was an Arby’s commercial and a traffic report. Shortly after that I turned it off, but I doubt it changed much. What meaning of “non-stop” are they using?

101°

101?? is the reading on my thermometer. Since it’s located under the eave on the front of my house, it could be a little off due to reflected heat, but it’s still really hot outside. I wouldn’t ordinarily know this, since I should be at work, but i simply didn’t feel like it this morning. I’m not really sick, just not feeling well. I’ll put some of that down to summer drawing to a close.?? I have been on a fairly even keel emotionally for most of the summer, but the closer the fall comes, the more I seem to be feeling down.?? I think it’s that I’ve let another summer go by without doing much that’s really fun or finding anyone to spend time with.

On the plus side, I’m losing a little weight, I’m reducing my debt, and the cats seem to be contented.
